Day 13: Camped in the Redwood Giants

So, I arrived in Crescent City on Sat night, where I found that as soon as I entered Cal. the gas prive went from $2.79/Gal to $3.49/Gal !!! (well still under BC prices..) I found a Walmart just down the road where I stayed the night. I started again driving to the Info center and got some info about where to go in the redwoods, The lady showed me a few things to do, so i did all of them. 1st: I headed down the  "Johsiah National Redwoodscenic trail" in my car (road through some crazy old growth)
2nd: I went on a hike for about 2 miles through some river beds, and more giants.
3rd: Found this living redwood that was hit by lightning and literally ripped the whole center of the tree out and was hollow. At the very bottom there was a small burrow that i crawled inside. It was black and super quiet, but when you look up you can see over 300 ft to the very top limbs. Right up into the clouds. Probably one of the most amazing feats of nature I have experienced - standing inside a monsterous LIVING organism and experiencing it's sheer size! Reminded me of what it would be like to look straight up in the middle of the eye of a tornado! just seeing the sun and clouds ! "in-tents!" lol                   ...BELOW

4th: Took exit 765 off 101 and saw more Giants, then pulled over to the redwood creek taril (7 mile hike) lol i made it about 2 miles before finding that the river crossing was out for the fall and winter. THis trail was where the largest redwood in the 1960's was found! but broke off due to snowfall... After I got out went to the trinidad cafe where I talked to a local about there is no longer the largest tree on that trail, and the new tallest is 379ft and its place is not known by the public.. So i didnt miss out lol. That night I slept at the Trinidad lookout over the ocean and watched a crazy sunset! I went for another hike in the morning after heading to Eureka where I found this HUGE Farmers Co-op health food store! such a good idea - best store eva'! - a normal sized grocery store, but 100% health foods, with gluten free, sugar free, Vegan/Veg, Bulk, and organic produce....awesomeness! I decided i really wanted to camp in the Redwoods last night so i hit up the "Wyoett" camp site ($35/night) but super dense forest, red soil, very dark and quite! best camping ever.  - Heading towards San Fran down Highway 1 tomorrow - maybe Fort Bragg?

Adam

Giant Tree!! Largest in Humbolt Redwood State Park! 364 ft tall - 38 ft diameter...
